In 2010 The Nature Conservancy Northern Caribbean Program (TNC NCP) completed a project funded by the Global Environment Facility entitled; Integrating Watershed and Coastal Areas Management (IWCAM) in small island Developing States of the Caribbean, demonstrating Land and Sea Use Planning for Water Recharge Protection in Andros. Because this project was the first of its kind on Andros, a lot of basic research was conducted to build the skeleton for future research that will educate the Bahamian public, build awareness pertaining to the water lens and other resources in Andros and change behaviors that threaten those resources.
The current research titled Fostering Watershed Conservation in the Pine Islands of The Bahamas builds on the IWCAM 2010 research and requires the development of a detailed water management plan that will describe the maximum yield of the Andros aquifer that will not lead to its destruction. The management plan will also assist with changing local policy and behaviors needed to reverse current damaging sanitation practices in South Andros by guiding the establishment of a demonstration site in South Andros, Bahamas which will employ green technologies suitable for the region.
