The City's voter-approved Integrated Solid Waste Management System is implemented by the Solid Waste Management Division of the Public Works Department and includes:
Curbside Recycling (provided by private waste haulers)
Household Chemical Collection Center
Yardwaste Recycling Center
Recycling Centers
Market Development Program
Information and Education Program
Springfield Sanitary Landfill
The Mission of the Division is to provide an Integrated solid Waste Management system for the City and County that is environmentally sound and economically feasible which represents a long-term solution to preserve the natural resources of the region for present and future generations.
The City-operated Recycling Centers provide citizens an opportunity to recycle post consumer materials. The safety and satisfaction of our customers are our priority. Likewise, we strive to provide them efficient and sustainable recycling drop-off services for the lowest cost to the City.
While revenue generated from the Centers is welcome, we understand the volatile nature of the recycling markets and part of our mission is to work with our contractors so we are able to provide dependable services to our citizens as our contractors generate sufficient revenue to remain in business and continue to provide the City with the level of service we must have.
Because we realize markets conditions vary by the type of material, we encourage potential contractors to submit proposals based, not only on the value of the materials, but also on the level of support that can be offered to our services. We are soliciting proposals that will facilitate sustainability of our contractors, support local recycling-related businesses and foster an efficient and effective recycling program for the City of Springfield. Some degree of flexibility is available. For example, revenue sharing proposals may include provisions for other than monthly payments.
The City currently hauls most of our own materials and we own most of the containers we use
