Sunflower Foundation Seeks Applications for Community-based Trails in Kansas
The Sunflower Foundation is accepting applications from communities and nonprofit organizations in Kansas for projects to build new or expand existing recreational trails that increase opportunities for physical activity for Kansans of all ages.
Through its Sunflower Trails: Community-Based New Trails or Trail Expansion program, the foundation will award grants of up to $55,000 for the purpose of constructing new trails or expanding existing trails of at least half a mile in length. Proposed trails that are less than half a mile because of local conditions/factors will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Organizations or communities proposing a trail that is less than half a mile should contact the foundation to discuss the factors restricting the trail length before submitting an application. The width of the proposed trail will depend on the scope of the project and site limitations, though a minimum of five to six feet is expected for pedestrian-only trails.
Public access to the trail is required, though hours may be restricted for user safety. Preference will be given to trails on public property. If the proposed trail is not on public property, applicants should contact the foundation to discuss before submitting an application.
Grant funds cannot be used for traditional city or neighborhood sidewalks, trail amenities (exercise stations, playground equipment, benches, gazebos, and general landscaping), and trails that prohibit public access and/or use.
Applicants must demonstrate a 1:1 match for the full amount requested. The match may not cover general operating or overhead/indirect expenses; staff salaries/benefits; volunteer time; work services by the organization directly seeking the funding; or trail amenities (exercise stations, playground equipment, benches, gazebos, general landscaping).
