Independent Sector presents the John W. Gardner Leadership Award each year to a living American citizen whose leadership in or with the nonprofit community has been transformative and who has mobilized and unified people, institutions, or causes that improve people's lives.

The Leadership Award honors visionaries who have empowered constituencies, strengthened participation, and inspired movements. Award recipients are builders people who, quite apart from personal achievements, have raised the capacity of others to advance the common good. Their leadership has either had national or international impact or, if at the regional level, has attracted wide recognition and imitation. Gardner Award recipients, who may be of any age, may be the creators of needed institutions or may concentrate on education and advocacy that changes public opinion. Their work has transformed their chosen field and has served as a role model to other fields.

The winner must be present at the award ceremony, which will be held at Independent Sector's annual conference in Atlanta, October 20-22, 2010.

Anyone may nominate an individual for the award. Nominations should be made without the candidate's knowledge.

Visit the Independent Sector Web site for complete program information.

The prize program welcomes the nominations of individuals who have developed an open source software product that has demonstrated impressive value to at least one nonprofit and has the potential to offer value to multiple nonprofit organizations.

The prize winner will be announced in Atlanta, Georgia, at the NTEN 2010 Nonprofit Technology Conference.

Complete nomination information for the Pizzigati Prize is available at the prize program Web site.
