The Minneapolis-based Headwaters Foundation for Justice has announced the launch of its Social Justice Leadership Institute, a nine-month program open to Twin Cities individuals interested in being part of the next generation of leaders creating and supporting social change locally.

The institute will focus on learning about social justice, engaging in a group fundraising project, and allocating the funds raised to local social justice causes. The program is designed to provide participants with a thoughtfully crafted framework for engaging with and supporting the social justice movement in Minnesota.

Activities will include instruction in social justice history and dynamics, social justice strategy, resource pooling, and community grantmaking; opportunities to interact with established local leaders and learn about their social justice journeys; site visits to local social justice organizations; and group projects to identify and allocate resources in the community.

The program is open to emerging Twin Cities leaders who are interested in investing themselves in the community to better understand local injustices and bring about transformative change.

Participants will be part of a group of approximately twenty-five people coming from diverse backgrounds to learn, reflect, and act together.

Participants are asked to commit to a total of nine meetings, including one overnight retreat in September 2011. The meetings will be held on the last Thursday of the month from October 2011 to June 2012.

The institute is free to participants. The leadership group will be raising a pool of money and giving it to local causes as part of the program. Participants will make a personal financial contribution to the project and will set a goal of fundraising from friends, family, and community, but there is no minimum required contribution.

A public information session for potential applicants will be held on August 4, 2011, in Minneapolis. Visit the Headwaters Foundation Web site for program guidelines and details on the information session.
