Food Bank For New York City recognizes 30 years as the city's major hunger-relief organization working to end food poverty throughout the five boroughs. As one of the country's largest food banks, our mission is to end hunger in New York City by organizing food, information and support for community survival and dignity. As the city's hub for integrated food poverty assistance, Food Bank For New York City tackles hunger on three fronts - emergency food distribution, financial empowerment and nutrition education.
Community CookShop was designed in partnership with and is fully funded by the Mario Batali Foundation. It differs from other CookShop components in that it is implemented at emegerncy food programs (pantries or soupo kitchens) within Food Bank For New York City's member network and focuses on intergenerational learning, providing nutrition education to parents/guardians and children in the same setting. Community CookShop provides the city's most vulnerable low-income families with the tools and skills needed to maintain a nutritious diet on a limited food budget. Participants learn to purchase, prepare and enjoy simple, healthy recipes using affordable and readily available ingredients.
Food Bank For New York City seeks to understand the impact of participation in Community CookShop on participants' attitudes and behaviors around healthy eating. The aim of this evaluation is to study the impacts on knowledge, attitudes and behavior related to healthy eating following participation in Community CookShop.
