The purpose of this RFP is to fund an innovative and effective International African
Marketplace Operator (Operator) who will work in conjunction with community-based
organizations, local residents, and merchants to implement a successful marketplace strategy. In
order to effectuate the International African Marketplace (IAM) as an international festival
celebrating the African Diaspora, the Agency seeks a qualified and enthusiastic Operator to
actively organize, produce, and implement the event.
Building on the foundation set forth from the 2006 and 2007 festivals, the San Francisco
Redevelopment Agency (Agency) expects the IAM to continue to flourish and attract attendees
from Bayview Hunters Point (BVHP), San Francisco, and the greater Bay Area. The qualified
Operator will implement a strategy that establishes the IAM as a multi-ethnic music,
entertainment, cultural, and tourist destination that provides economic opportunities for local
merchants, artists, food vendors, and musicians. The IAM will continue to include such things
as, but not limited to, the display and sale of: a) arts, crafts, sculptures, fabrics, clothing, and
books; and b) fresh, wholesome and healthy foods as commonly found in a Farmers Market.
Additionally, it will serve as a venue for the presentation of musical performances, such as
gospel, jazz, blues, reggae, African, and world music, and the arts such as storytelling, drama,
and poetry.
