The California Endowment's Innovative Ideas Challenge program awards grants to applicants looking to implement compelling new ideas that address health issues in California.

From 2010 to 2020, the endowment is investing the majority of its resources in the Building Healthy Communities plan, which seeks to create communities where prevention is a priority and is reflected in the physical environment and socioeconomic conditions of those neighborhoods.

The ICC is a grantmaking program available to organizations from communities not funded under the Building Healthy Communities plan. The endowment is seeking to fund innovative approaches to addressing the persistent and emerging health issues that impact underserved communities in California. Specifically, IIC seeks to identify and fund promising practices that are aligned with the goals of the Building Healthy Communities plan.

The ICC is designed to engage a broad set of partners to develop and test effective models developed by affected communities; establish a pool of original ideas that will dramatically improvethe health status of underserved individuals and communities in California; and support innovators who can rapidly engage in work that will promote fundamental health improvements in the health status of all Californians. This can be through new ventures or expansions of already existing efforts. Special attention will be paid to proposals that are public/private partnerships.

The IIC program recognizes transformative ideas that often are high risk and subject to possible failure. No grant request will be funded 100 percent.

The endowment makes grants to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations that are classified as a public charity and not as a private foundation under Section 509(a). If a proposal is from an unincorporated collaboration or community project, tax exemption verification and a letter of agreement signed by a lead applicant agency are required.
