The Horse Unit in the Department maintains approximately 100
horses of various ages and genders, including broodmares, stallions, young horses and adult nonbreeding
horses. The horses are used in equine research, instruction and extension activities. Most
horses are maintained in pastures, but will be individually housed during various times of the year to
meet research, teaching or management needs. Veterinary care is needed when animals become
sick, lame or injured. In addition, routine veterinary services are needed to maintain reproductive
efficiency, to provide routine health testing (Coggins, EVA, etc.), to provide pre-sale exams and
other various services. Veterinary care is often observed by students and others in an educational
setting. The University does not have the capacity to provide comprehensive on-site
veterinary services to the Horse Unit so private, licensed practitioners must be engaged to provide
necessary care. The needed veterinary services require practitioners to have a completely
equipped ambulatory practice (digital x-ray; endoscope; ultrasound; pharmaceuticals, etc).
