1.0 Background:
This equipment does not hold or store patient information.
The VA Community Living Center is requesting the UltraMIST Ultrasound Healing Therapy (UHT) machine, which provides a noncontact low-frequency ultrasound therapy and is delivered through a saline mist to the veteran/ patient wound. Unlike conventional wound treatments that are limited to treating the surface of the wound, the UHT delivers through ultrasound energy into, and below the surface of the wound. This device has been shown to reduce the time for complete healing by almost half the normal time. The mechanical stimulation provided by the ultrasound waves has a significant effect on wound healing by reducing barriers to healing, like bacteria and sustained inflammation, which accelerates the normal healing process. At the same time, the sound waves stimulate the cells to increase perfusion, release needed growth factors, and increase angiogenesis to shorten the healing process.
UHT is used in wound management protocols across a wide range of health care settings dependent upon the needs of the individual patient and the clinical setting. Treatments are commonly administered by trained healthcare professionals whom are certified on the equipment and proper treatment techniques. These UHT sessions are approximately 20-30 minutes long, with the initial treatment administered for 5 days in an inpatient setting and then 3 times a week until healed or patient is discharged. Noticeable, improvements in the wound(s) should be evident after 2 weeks or 6 treatments. The length of individual treatments will vary per wound size according to manufacturer recommendations. Improvements include, reduction in pain, inflammation, and/or edema/induration, improved granulation tissue, a decrease in wound size and/or wound volume. This can be used as a standalone treatment or as an adjunctive therapy with other wound treatments such as Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT), Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), Compression Bandages, and/or application of skin substitutes.

The period of performance will be 30 days after receipt of award.
