The First Lady's Family Literacy Initiative for Texas, a program of the Barbara Bush Texas Fund for Family Literacy, is inviting applications for Implementation Grants and, new this year, Planning Grants.

Implementation Grants of up to $50,000 are given to organizations in Texas to help create a family literacy program (i.e., one that offers adult literacy education for parents or primary caregivers, pre-literacy or literacy instruction for young children, and interactive literacy activities for the young children together with their parents or primary caregivers); expand an existing reading program that works with only one generation so that a complete family literacy program (including the required components named above) can be created; allow for an innovative project within an existing family literacy program; or replicate a successful family literacy program with a new population or in a new location. Applicants for Implementation Grants must be a local educational agency, correctional agency, community-based organization, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, public institution, or a consortium of these agencies; be based with an established organization that has maintained current nonprofit or public status for at least two years; already provide adult literacy, early childhood, or interactive intergenerational literacy as part of their organizational mission; and have demonstrated fiscal accountability.

The new Planning Grant program is intended to support a nine-month planning and development process (from June 2011 through February 2012) that will enable an organization to more effectively compete in 2012 for a First Lady's Family Literacy Initiative for Texas program Implementation Grant. Planning Grants of up to $5,000 each will be given to organizations in Texas to plan for creation of a family literacy program. Eligible applicants for these grants must be a local educational agency, correctional agency, community-based organization with Nonprofit Organization (NPO) or 501(c)(3) status, or a public institution; be based with an established organization that has maintained current nonprofit or public status for at least two years; and have demonstrated fiscal accountability.

Please note: An organization may not apply for both a Planning Grant and an Implementation Grant. In addition, receipt of a Planning Grant does not guarantee subsequent receipt of an Implementation Grant.
