TTUHSC El Paso Medical Science Building II Public Art

The Texas Tech University System seeks to commission a professional artist to create a site-specific exterior installation to be placed in front of the new Medical Science Building II, located at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center campus in El Paso, TX. Construction of the facility will be completed by March 2019.
Texas Tech University Health Science Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso) is the only health sciences center along the U.S.-Mexico border that provides the opportunities and environment for direct intellectual and interpersonal exchanges among nursing, medical, and graduate research students on one campus.
This piece should be outdoors and available to the community; ideal submissions should be well integrated with the landscaping in the area and well-lit at night. The public art should help draw attention to the building's entrance, but also help create a cohesive, campus-like feel in front of the building.
Among relevant concepts to consider are the medical field and how to integrate medicine into the culture and vibrancy of El Paso. It should create a natural gathering place for students and the community. Because this is an innovative medical facility, we expect the artist to also be innovative. Pieces that are considered too abstract should be avoided. Any concepts that may be considered polemic or political should be avoided. Artists should attempt to create a design that speaks to the diversity that a university such as the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center campus in El Paso brings to the community.
In order to be considered, submissions must comply with the requirements outlined in the RFQ. Objects that are mass-produced or of standard manufacture are not eligible for consideration.
