The Paso del Norte Health Foundation announces the Step It Up Initiative request for proposal (RFP) for the 2007-2008 grant cycle. This grant cycle runs March 1, 2007 February 28, 2006.

The mission of the Paso del Norte Health Foundation is to effect long-term improvements in the health status of the population in the Paso del Norte Region through education and prevention.

The Paso del Norte Step It Up Initiative is designed to improve the health status of adult residents within the Paso del Norte region by promoting physical activity among adults. This initiative builds on Walk Paso del Norte successes and research that confirms that physical activity and exercise are important for adult health. Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Health may also be defined as the quality of a persons physical, psychological, and sociological functioning that enables him or her to deal with a variety of personal and social situations. Furthermore, health may be defined as the capacity to cope with or adapt to disruptions among the organic, social, and personal components of the individuals health system.

The Step It Up Initiative will fund regional agencies to implement culturally appropriate interventions
designed to improve the health status of the adult population by promoting physical activity. Interventions can promote physical activity for a sedentary adult population considering or making
plans to become active or reinforce physical activity among already active adults.
