The main building housing the Volunteer Fire Department of Greenwich, NY was built in the 1870's. Before the Village issues an RFP to hire an architect to plan how to bring the station up to modern standards, the Village first needs to determine if the building can be used or if it needs to be demolished.

The two story, brick building in question was built as an extension to a school built circa 1840. During the building's conversion to a firehouse in the 1960's, the first floor was removed; the basement filled in to ground level; and three apparatus doors cut into one wall. Nothing was done to stabilize the structure, either at the time of its conversion or since.

The following questions need to be answered:

1.Can the building be stabilized in such a way that it can continue to be used to house fire fighting apparatus and what would the cost be.

2.Can the building be stabilized in such a way that it can be used to house secondary fire fighting vehicles, such as an emergency response truck, brush truck and similar equipment and what would the cost be.

3.If the deterioration of the building reached such a point that it must be torn down, what would the cost for demolition and removal be.

Bids must be returned to the Village Clerk no later than Friday, September 9, 2011, to be opened at the Village Board meeting of Monday, September 12, 2011.
