The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking to replace gear box input and output shaft seals on existing gear box speed reducers installed on dams along the Upper Mississippi River from Lock 2 through Lock 10. The gear boxes are from several manufacturers and were installed between 1934-1940 for the models from the D.O. James Manufacturing, Philadelphia, Cleveland Worm and Gear, and Foote Bros Gear and Machine companies. Harnischfeger Gear Boxes were installed between 1990-1995. The gear boxes range from single to double reduction drives, and employ helical, spiral bevel, or worm gears appropriately, and drive machinery on either roller or tainter gate dam machinery, as indicated. Shaft sizes also vary. Historical design and maintenance information is limited however some original design drawings for reference are provided. Also included is a spreadsheet with technical data acquired from field visits and consulting historical references to include attached drawings. The Government is seeking vendors with the ability/capability to provide replacement seals prior to building a solicitation package. Vendors shall specify recommended materials, sizes, and any additional pertinent information.
