The Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) is supported by the Weapons Systems and Engineering Center (WSEC) who is the parent organization of the small arms fire control division and optics metrology laboratory. This laboratory is responsible for the measurement, analysis, development and testing of optical systems for all small arms fire control programs within ARDEC. Responsibilities also include testing and evaluating developmental, commercial and military devices, as well as design, build and characterize prototype imaging devices. Current needs include increasing safety to users and systems from laser devices under a Foreign Technology Assessment Support (FTAS) program request. Specialized filter units must be examined in order to assure current technology and material science is adequate to meet the current mission needs and requirements. Developmental testing and experimentation of proprietary and foreign materials is necessary to ensure advancement over the current fielded state of technology and what is commercially available in the current market. The government is interested in a laser protection filter that can be used to block laser light from pulsed laser sources. The laser protection filter should have numerous photonic properties. Before being irradiated by the laser pulse, the filter should be highly transparent and have no obvious color or pigmentation. The laser protection filter should work for pulsed lasers with wavelengths from the near IR to the visible and into the UV spectral region. The filter should not significantly inhibit the soldier situational awareness after a few laser pulses. The filter technology should be readily manufacturable. The filter technology should be compatible with standard glass substrate materials. The laser filter technology should be available in different substrate diameters. It is assumed that the laser protection filter would be placed in the focal plane of a direct view optic.
