This posting is a follow up to W909MY-13-Q-STEP, posted on 15 September 2013.

The need exists for an improved, more fuel efficient Tactical Electric Power (TEP) capability that will support military operations worldwide. The means to generate this electricity must use less fuel via improved efficiency, be more reliable, mobile, deployable, readily maintainable, sufficiently durable and quiet. It is imperative that US Army and Joint Forces continually improve tactical electric power (generation and distribution) to satisfy their future electric power needs. These advanced TEP systems (or sets) will benefit units by having increased system efficiency and reliability, mobility and maintainability. With these operational advantages, units will see a significant reduction in sustainment requirements and support costs. Tactical electric power is an enduring need for current and future forces.

The Small Tactical Electric Power (STEP) is a solution to meet this need in the 2 and 3 (kilowatt) kW power range. STEP will replace existing systems and is a modernization program that will provide improved tactical electric mobile power sources for replacement of the currently fielded 2 kW Military Tactical Generator (MTG) sets and 3 kW Tactical Quiet Generator (TQG) sets, initially procured in the 1990s. STEP models will be more mobile, reliable, and logistically supportable tactical electric power sources than their predecessors for the Department of Defense's (DOD's) 21st century digitized forces including combat, combat support, and combat service support units throughout the Army and the other military Services within the DOD and Missile Defense Agency.
