Statement of Need:
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Center for Biologics Evaluation and
Research (CBER), The Laboratory of Biochemistry and Vascular Biology (LBVB) is seeking a
Small Animal Ventilation System which is computer-controlled device easily interchanged for
use in pressure and volume-controlled modes. Capable of controlled pressure and volume timed
ventilation adopted to use in multiple animals species and multiple animals at the same time.
Background:
The LBVB is primarily involved in investigating mechanism of hemoglobin-induced toxicities
and understating the redox chemistry of this important protein. The information gained from
these studies might be critical in designing safe and effective hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers.
The lab is currently evaluating hemoglobin-induced pulmonary toxicities in vitro using lung
epithelial cell lines. The ultimate aim is to study the responses in preclinical models. Hence, the
need of a high-end small animal ventilator which monitors respiratory parameters real time and
which can be adopted for use in multiple animals at the same time. Ventilating multiple animals
would not only minimize variations but also reduce critical time in performing these
experiments.
Minimum Technical Requirements:
 110 volts - 120 volts
 Allow for ventilation of animals from 20 grams to 10 kilograms in weight such as rats,
guinea pigs and rabbits
 Adjustable Inspiratory: Expiratory (I:E) ratio
 Pressure and volume controlled ventilation
 Unlimited tidal volume minimum and maximum
 Computer-controlled and gradual transition to Positive End-Expiratory Pressure (PEEP)
 Computer-controlled aerosol generation
 Pre-programmable ventilation patterns
 Software program to analyze lung mechanics real-time fashion
 Pre-programmable multiple ventilation patterns
 Ability to ventilate at minimum four (4) animals at the same time
 Gating for medical imaging devises
 Digital signal outputs
 Vital Signs monitoring
 At least one-year warranty
