The Florida Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA) is seeking qualified applicants to conduct targeted community-based outreach to prospective Medicare beneficiaries in the Gainesville, Ocala, and Miami areas. The department intends to provide mini-grant awards to one or more of these successful applicants. The grant awards will be administered through the department's SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) program. SHINE is a volunteer-based program that provides free, unbiased health insurance information and counseling to Florida elders. Total funding for this program is approximately $57,000. The Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA) provides the contextual reference of the requirements for this program. The mini-grant awards will assist Medicare beneficiaries, in low-income and rural areas, apply for and receive Medicare benefits.
