The City of Durham began charging customers for stationary container collection in the 1990s.
In addition to collecting solid waste from private stationary containers, the City also services all
City-owned stationary containers and cardboard recycling sites. Due to the economic conditions
felt nationwide, and in an effort to maximize the taxpayers ability to have quality services at low
costs, the Department of Solid Waste Management is making changes to its methods of
stationary container trash collection and the servicing of cardboard recycling centers. The City is
eliminating the collection of stationary containers for most customers and shall only continue the
collection of stationary containers sites and cardboard recycling sites which are City-owned and
one small segment of stationary container customers. This RFP is seeking a Contractor that can
provide collection of this small number of stationary container sites and cardboard recycling
collection services.
