The Port of Anchorage (POA) was recently re-designated a Group II port in
accordance with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) guidelines. As such, the
POA is now in a different category when it comes to awards made through DHSs
annual Port Security Grant Program (PSGP). Consequently, starting in the 2009
grant year, in order for the POA to take advantage of PSGP dollars it must have a
published Risk Mitigation Plan. That plan must incorporate a five-year vision for
needed security infrastructure upgrades. These needed upgrades must be listed in
priority order based on importance as it relates to providing a more secure and safe
port facility. Additionally, the Risk Mitigation Plan must meet DHS/U.S. Coast Guard
requirements, and is subject to the review of the Western Alaska Area Maritime
Security Committee.
