The Ministries can be generally informed by current research where it exists, however, there may be occasions where targeted research within the Alberta context is required to inform specific policy directions and decisions necessary to meet implementation deadlines. Such research activity may include environmental scans, literature reviews, project evaluations, proof-of-concept studies, research and development projects, and full-scale investigations of cost-efficiency and cost-effectiveness. These activities may also involve focus groups, interviews, surveys, and/or other direct contact with individuals, including students.

Evidence from research will enable the Ministries officials and staff, as well as senior decision-makers within the learning system, to:
Use research findings to inform effective decisions.
Lead the education system in developing the most effective ways to use technology to support teaching and learning.
Adopt effective practices.
Target investments to areas of greatest effectiveness and priority.
Anticipate and respond to change.
