SRNS is in need of a hydrogen permeator (i.e. diffuser) to separate hydrogen isotopes from a gas stream consisting of various mixtures of helium, nitrogen, argon and hydrogen isotopes.

The hydrogen permeator (i.e. diffuser) shall be designed to and capable of meeting the following:
• Design Temperature: 600°C (1112°F)
• Design Pressure: Full vacuum to 60 psig
• The diffuser shall be designed, fabricated, inspected, and tested in a manner that meets the requirements of ASME B&PV Code Section VIII, Division 1 with the exception that the vessel is not to be stamped with the "U" symbol. Code compliant design calculations are required with the supplier's fabrication prints prior to fabrication release.
• Normal Operating Temperature: 400 +/- 25°C
• Normal Operating Pressure Range: Full vacuum to 2165 torr (41.86 psia)
• Operational Feed Rate Capacity: 20 SLPM @ max operating pressure of 2300 torr (44.47 psia)
• The pressure drop across the diffuser shall be less than 130 torr at 15.0 SLPM inlet flow rate.
• Diffusers typically contain 1/8" palladium-silver tubes with a nominal composition of 75% palladium & 25% silver, with .003" - .004" nominal wall thickness. However, other sizes, compositions and thicknesses may be accepted with approval, e.g. 77% palladium, 23% silver. The tubes shall be configured in parallel and contain a minimum of 470 in2 membrane area of palladium/silver tubing. Feed gas shall be introduced to the inside of the tubes so that the direction of hydrogen diffusion is from the inside of the tubes to the outside. The feed gas shall enter the assembly at the same end as the bleed gas exits the assembly. The feed tube will also provide a means for the gas to be preheated prior to entering the palladium-silver tube. Bleed outlet gas shall exit from the tubes at the same end as the inlet feed. Pure hydrogen gas shall exit from a tube on the opposite end than the bleed and feed gas.
• The internal diameter of the containment vessel shall be less than or equal to 6.0 inches (i.e. 6 inch Sch.80S pipe is acceptable).
• The exterior of the diffuser vessel shall include a hydrogen permeation barrier.

The hydrogen permeator (i.e. diffuser) shall include the following:
• Heater(s) capable of operating the diffuser at 400+/-25°C; heater(s) shall operate on 120 VAC, 60 Hz, single phase current. A Type "K" dual element thermocouple shall be integral to each heater to prevent the heater(s) temperature from exceeding Design Temperature.
• Thermal insulation around the metallic vessel shall be sufficient to prevent external temperature from exceeding 60°C at maximum operating temperature of 425°C.
• Based upon operating experience, the diffuser is expected to remove hydrogen isotopes from a nitrogen feed stream at 2 SLPM containing 1% hydrogen isotopes, producing a raffinate stream containing less than 0.03% hydrogen isotopes. The diffuser also shall be capable of removing hydrogen isotopes from a nitrogen feed stream at 1 SLPM containing 95% hydrogen isotopes, producing a raffinate stream containing less than 1% hydrogen isotopes.

Note: The above design requirements are not all inclusive of the requirements within the official procurement specification, but are provided as a high level sample of the key design features.
