The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships (ACHAP) a 12-month planning and piloting grant to develop a strategy aimed at providing free computer and Internet services in public libraries for all Botswana residents. This planning period will equally allow the project team based at ACHAP and the Botswana National Library Service (BNLS) to prepare a comprehensive funding proposal. This is to cover the whole country using as inputs, lessons derived from the test pilots which will indicate the best ways to involve other players and partners in delivering broadband Internet access; cost implications/costs involved to do so; critical community needs to be addressed by the program as well as the requisite information and communication technology (ICT) skills for librarians to be able to execute the complimentary role of training or helping the public use the computers and the Internet.
