Road 210 - Thin and Hand Pile Contract 2018

IN APPROXIMATELY 1 DAY, THE SOLICITATION FOR THIS COMMERCIAL SERVICE PROJECT WILL BE AVAILABLE TO VIEW AND PRINT.

SCOPE OF WORK

Lodgepole pine mortality, caused by mountain pine beetle, has left large numbers of dead trees in the Sawtooth Valley and Stanley Basin. This "high fuel loading" can cause torching, spotting and intense wildfire behavior. The Redfish 210 Post-Insect Fuels Reduction Project is a 3,000 acre project designed to reduce the effects of beetle caused mortality and to mitigate the resulting high fuels build up. The purpose of this project is to reduce the accumulated fuels in the project area, maintain natural openings as fuel breaks, and change forest composition, structure, and density, to move the forest toward desired vegetative conditions and reduce the potential for high intensity wildfires that could destroy valuable human resources. This portion of the project will address forest thinning to create control lines in areas that may be prescribed burned near the Redfish Lake Road (FS road # 214) and the National Forest/State boundary; Unit A (18 acres), Unit B (21 acres) and Unit C (13 acres). These thinned areas will be adjacent to the Redfish Lake Road, National Forest/State boundary and connect to areas where trees were recently removed or will be in the near future. The thinned areas will create fire control lines and allow Forest Service personnel to implement small prescribed fire treatments.

Project Location & Description

The project area is located in the Upper Salmon River Valley within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area of the Sawtooth National Forest. The project area is located between Forest Service Road #214 (Redfish Lake Road) and Forest Service Road #210 (Decker Flat Road) approximately 5 miles south of Stanley, ID. The area can be accessed by heading south on Highway 75 for approximately 4 miles from Stanley, Idaho to the Redfish Lake Road (Forest Service Road #214). Heading west on the Redfish Lake Road will access Units A and B. Forest Service Road #210 is approximately 1/4 mile from the Highway 75/ Redfish Lake Road intersection and will have best access to Unit C. Heading south on Forest Service Road #210, Unit C is approximately 1 mile south of the Redfish Lake Road/FS Road #210 intersection along the west boundary of State land. Easiest access is to follow Road # 210 to the southern State land boundary (approximately 2 miles) and follow boundary line west to the southwest corner of state land.
