This project will investigate, identify, and assess the requirements to protect the windows of these facilities from shattering into the patient rooms during hurricane force wind events. A clear film is being proposed to be placed on the inside of the exterior glass windows of a total of 513 patient rooms. Included are 54 ICU identified patient rooms which have full length sliding glass doors to separate the ICU room from the nursing stations. These full length glass doors will also require the protective film.
Also, included in the total are 81 rooms identified to require wooden window shutters installed on the inside of the room windows in addition to the glass protective film. These rooms include the radiation implant rooms and the intensive care units. The reason for using shutters in addition to the protective film in these specifically identified rooms is in case of an extreme event where evacuation procedures are being followed, it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to evacuate and relocate the patients in these rooms to other safe areas of the hospital. The wooden window shutters will be shut and locked manually prior to the hurricane event.
Programming, engineering and scheduling of all work for this project must be considerate of patient operations. Noise, dust, intrusion into patient rooms, halls and common areas must be scheduled with operations contact for each hospital area.
Project deliverables include site investigation, room identifications, complete construction and material specifications, complete design and construction detailed drawing package and with construction administration responsibilities.
