Virtual reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) devices are being used for medical applications such as diagnostics and surgery planning. The capabilities and specifications of the devices varies widely and are rapidly developing. The manufactures reported specifications are insufficient to determine the performance of the devices for medical tasks. These devices require performance testing to determine the safety and effectiveness for specific tasks approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The development of bench performance testing methods is required to determine the performance of these devices. Measuring parameters of the devices, such as the brightness, noise, and resolution, is critical for assessing the effectiveness for medical tasks. These measurements will require a calibrated imaging system that can provide quantitative measurements of the device being tested. The use of a Calibrated imaging photometer will provide quantitative radiometric images of head-mounted virtual and augmented reality devices. The proposed purchase will allow for quantitative measurements of the device by measuring the brightness and resolution of the devices.
FDA requires a 5 megapixel imaging photometer with a 28 mm and 100 mm lens to allow for both wide-field and high resolution measurements of the devices. This instrument will be installed in an FDA-built optical setup and will require technical support and support for Visual Basic or LabVIEW.
