The 40 inch 5/color Heidelberg Printing Press (CD102-5+LX, serial number 545264) incorporating the Drystar 2000 dryer unit and controls was purchased at an approximate cost of 1.4 million dollars in March of 2008 from an used equipment broker, MKM Importers Inc. The system has experienced several issues in the past twenty months of which most have been resolved except one major concern. The press is equipped with an aqueous coater that requires a sophisticated drying system in order to seal the finished printed product. This particular press located at the Print Plant was originally factory built meet unique specifications that limited the driers ability to handle a wide variety of substrates. This was acceptable to the original press owner as he only handled one type of substrate. This issue has become problematic for the Correction Enterprises because the Nash Print Plant handles a much wider array of substrates (paper). To correct this issue, the drying capabilities of the printing press need to be enhanced and new software installed. The Drystar unit is providing only limited drying capabilities and minimal control at this time. Additionally, modification may need to be performed on the hot-air and IR cassettes, including the replacement of heating elements. The OEM is the Heidelberg Corporation of which there is no warranty situation involved.
