The services of the Consultant shall generally consist of performing a wheel/rail study. The
study shall include but not be limited to an analysis of the wheel/rail interface and review of
applicable vehicle and track wear maintenance practices as required to develop and propose
recommendations to optimize equipment and track life. The new PA-5 wheel profile is to be
analyzed, but PATH prefers not to change this profile without just cause.
The objectives of this study are to establish a program to optimize equipment life and
minimize maintenance and operating costs, determine optimal configurations for those
elements that affect the wheel/rail interface (including a new wheel/rail profile design and
levels of lubrication), to provide specific recommendations to reduce wheel/rail wear and
noise levels, to improve ride quality and operation safety and to provide a cost/benefit
assessment of the recommended program.
