The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) has experienced accelerated membership growth in recent years, which has changed the membership mix in some quantifiable ways. As of yet, we do not adequately understand how or to what extent these changes will affect member expectations and affiliation. SfN does, however, recognize that these changes may have implications for the ability to promote future membership growth and enhance member satisfaction.
Historically, many members renew membership to participate in sharing scientific data through abstracts submission and annual meeting attendance. As well, long term members may renew out of loyalty to SfN. Over the past few years the data trend appears to demonstrate an evolution in the pattern of renewal, retention and new member recruitment. To sustain membership growth and member satisfaction it will be important to implement new initiatives stressing the importance of sharing scientific information and professional development as well as to identify future tangible benefits which will be viewed as valuable by SfN members.
