The Map is a web application that includes a database of community technology
resources in the Austin area, capabilities for people to search and visualize information in the
database, and mechanisms to facilitate data management and workflow.
Community technology includes information and communications technology (ICT) training
and access that promotes civic and cultural participation, employment, and lifelong learning.
Examples of community technology resources:
• Public computer labs
• Computer classes
• Multimedia training
• Sci/Tech afterschool programs
The project has two goals:
• External Goal – Develop a tool to facilitate referrals from local community technology
consumers to local community technology providers.
• Internal Goal – Develop a profile of local community technology resource availability,
and identify areas of need.
The CT Map will be available to the public. We anticipate that the most frequent users will be
local agencies and caseworkers, looking to provide a referral on behalf of a client.
We anticipate that the CT Map initial service area will be the City of Austin extra-territorial
jurisdiction (ETJ). The Austin ETJ is the unincorporated land within five miles of Austin’s
boundary that is not within the city limits or ETJ of another city. More information, including
jurisdiction maps, is here: http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/annexation/ We anticipate expanding the
service area to encompass more of central Texas if resources and demand justify it
The CT Map will be integrated into the Austin Connects (www.austinconnects.org) website. At
this time, our website uses the WordPress content management system. We anticipate, as
part of this project, migrating to a new website – and possibly a new publishing platform. The
new website design is part of this project.
A “proof of concept” prototype of the CT Map has been developed to help us refine the project
requirements. The prototype was implemented in Drupal version 6, and is temporarily posted
at: http://www.soaustin.net/~chip/ctmap/. We will provide the contractor with access to the
prototype, including the custom node and view implementations
Drupal solution stated preference.
