The School of Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is sponsoring "Manifestations of Memory," a national student design ideas competition for an American slavery memorial. This project does not include plans to actually construct a memorial, but argues that the art and architectural designs themselves provide a rich and valuable resource that honors and preserves the memory of slaves for the present generation. The surrounding discourse will further our understanding and appreciation of those who were enslaved and their descendants, speak to the issue of how slavery continues to define who we are, and explore its impact on race relations in America today.
