The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), has established the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) on the campus of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) as a DOE User Facility. As a national User Facility, we are reaching out to the community to bring in potential users and research partners. The Annual User Call is one of many mechanisms by which external partners may access the unique capabilities of the ESIF and the expertise of NREL researchers. A majority of laboratory resources are allocated on this annual cycle.

This 182,500-ft research facility provides state-of-the-art laboratory and support infrastructure to optimize the design and performance of electrical, thermal, fuel, and information technologies and systems at scale. ESIF is the nation's first research facility that can perform integrated megawatt-scale research and development (R&D) to address energy challenges.

Through its Grid Modernization Multi-Year Program Plan (MYPP), DOE coordinates a portfolio of activities to help set the nation on a cost-effective path to a resilient, secure, sustainable, and reliable grid that is flexible enough to provide an array of emerging services while remaining affordable to consumers. These activites enable the integration of conventional and renewable sources of electricity, solve challenges of energy storage and distributed generation, and provide a critical platform for U.S. competitiveness and innovation in a global energy economy.

Applications are now being accepted for Energy Systems Integration, Materials or Device Development, and High-Impact projects to be conducted in the ESIF that will accelerate innovation in the private sector and develop scalable technologies that satisfy the goals of the U.S. DOE Grid Modernization Initiative.
