The North Carolina Department of Correction (DOC) employees are public servants and must be persons of sound moral character. In dealing with criminal offenders and the public, employees must firmly establish authority, yet show themselves worthy of trust by maintaining appropriate conduct on and off duty as well as demonstrating reliability to the citizens of the State for general safety and protection.
It is the policy of the Department of Correction to maintain a drug free and alcohol-free work environment through the use of an employee and applicant drug and alcohol-testing program. This program is designed for pre-employment applicants and current employees of the Department and the program is comprised into two main categories:
A. Pre-employment Drug Screens for Criminal Justice Certified Applicants
B. U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Drug and Alcohol Testing of Employees occupying positions requiring a Commercial Drivers License (CDL)
C. Reasonable Suspicion (Non-CDL, Non Pre-employment Criminal Justice) Drug and Alcohol Testing of Employees
