The Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a Department of Energy-funded synchrotron facility that provides users from around the world access to the brightest beams of soft x-rays, together with hard x-rays and infrared, for scientific research and technology development in a wide range of disciplines.

The ALS-U project is an ongoing upgrade of the ALS. Recent accelerator physics breakthroughs now enable the production of highly focused beams of soft x-ray light that are at least 100 times brighter than those of our existing facility. The improved capabilities of the upgraded ALS will enable transformative science that cannot be performed on any other existing or planned light source in the world.

LBNL is configuring a Magnet Measurement Facility (MMF) to support the ALS-U project. The MMF will be responsible for Quality Assurance tasks and complex, precise magnet performance measurements. The instrumentation requirements of the MMF include a new Coordinate Measurement Machine with a moving bridge of sufficient height to clear the magnet assemblies required for the ALS-U.
