Converting Articulate Flat Cars Into Electrified Flats

Alaska, United States
RFP

Alaska Railroad will be converting 9 articulated flat cars comprising three platforms each
(27 total) into ielectrified flatsi that will go into KFF (Keep From Freezing) service. Total
car length is 160i5i over strikers.

(An articulated flat car is one car with couplers on each end, but has three distinct
platforms between those ends that articulate on 2 shared common trucks.)

This work entails wiring the cars with 480Vac 3 phase receptacles which feed 2/0 cable
that is then split into 10/4 cable to each of the three trailer hitch stands on each car.
Power is supplied through exterior means and is not part of this work scope. The power
then goes into a jumper cable that feeds the truck/van trailer unit mounted on the trailer
body. Trailer units (supplied by our customers) nominally have a 30amp breaker and
draw 15-20KW per unit.
