Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (DSNI) is a thirty year-old resident-led, non-profit planning and organizing group in the Roxbury/North Dorchester area of Boston. DSNI's mission is to empower Dudley residents to organize, plan for, create, and control a vibrant, diverse and high quality neighborhood in collaboration with community partners. DSNI's approach to neighborhood revitalization is comprehensive and focuses on three strategic areas-sustainable and economic development, leadership development and collaboration, and youth opportunities and development. In partnership with nonprofit organizations, community development corporations (CDCs), businesses, and religious institutions serving the neighborhood, DSNI works to implement resident-led revitalization plans.
Today, DSNI is engaged in a wide range of community change efforts, affecting all areas of neighborhood life. Examples include:
The Boston Promise Initiative (BPI): This place-based approach to transforming community-school relationships and accelerating academic achievement will ensure sustained success in school for all Dudley children.
Strong Leaders, Brighter Futures: This youth mentoring program will pair neighborhood adults with youth in mentoring matches, designed to ensure that our community supports youth development and entry into college and family-supporting careers.
Dudley Children Thrive: This organizing approach connects neighborhood families with small children to each other, and to the resources that all families need to help meet the challenges of raising children today.
The Dudley Workforce Committee: This group of local business leaders, union officials and residents work together to ensure that local construction projects prioritize hiring of community residents.
In addition, 2014 is DSNI's 30th anniversary year. In celebration of our thirty years of work in community building and transformation and as a platform for the next thirty years, we plan to celebrate the anniversary throughout the year, using our regular annual events (Open House, Annual Meeting, Multicultural Festival) as well as special events, including a "homecoming weekend" with a black tie event to celebrate community leaders who have moved on, and the development of community celebrations in other ways. Generations of Change: DSNI@30 will be the theme of these celebrations and will set the stage for our next thirty years of work.
Each of these initiatives, and the many other projects, campaigns and events which are coordinated, planned and organized by DSNI Board members and staff, require visibility to support continued progress. To support organizational visibility, community organizing, friend- and fundraising, DSNI seeks to hire a consultant to support and build our communications and public relations capacity.
The position will be a contract position, within the Management function at DSNI. The consultant will work closely with DSNI staff, Board and partner organizations. The position reports to DSNI's Executive Director.
The Communications Consultant will be responsible for planning, development and implementation of the 30th anniversary activities related to DSNI's general audience public relations, marketing, press and visibility strategies, including activities both external and internal. S/he will oversee development and implementation of support materials and services for strategic areas and programs in the area of marketing, communications and public relations. A detailed position description is included.
