The Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, with millions of books, recordings, photographs, maps and manuscripts in its collections.

The Space Utilization Planning and Design Division (SUPD) is responsible for developing and implementing Library policy and practices governing the use of space, collections storage solutions, furniture and furnishings procurement and facility project management.

In this capacity, SUPD is developing a program to replace obsolete and inefficient collection storage systems within all Library of Congress Buildings. The result of this effort will update and modernize collections storage systems and add collections storage capacity within the existing facilities to coincide with a multi-year Facility Plan.

This plan advocates expanded use of high-density shelving and varied types of modern storage systems to improve preservation, storage capacity, efficiency, and display storage opportunities. Storage units for different types of collections, such as prints and photographs, maps, special format collections, manuscripts and books are included in this RFI.
