The City of Berkeley currently has about 200 emergency shelter beds available year-round, and about 300 available in winter months. However, because there is no centralized intake system, it is difficult for service providers and outreach workers, as well as for individuals needing assistance, to find out whether and where vacancies exist. As part of the Citys Public Commons for Everyone Initiative, the City is inviting proposals to develop a centralized homeless intake system that address the following goals: (1) provide a single point of access for shelter beds in Berkeley; (2) provide real time information about availability of shelter beds; (3) reduce the number of vacant shelter beds on any given night; and (4) coordinate shelter bed resources with homeless prevention strategies. With such a program in place, the city also would be better able to identify and target those individuals who need the most immediate attention, with the ultimate goal of getting these people into permanent supportive housing and integrating the system of care for homeless individuals throughout Alameda County.
