The Department is seeking services for the Brush Management - Herbicide Treatment Project. The project area is located in Training Area 2 across and surrounding the Drop Zone (DZ). The 180 acre DZ has been previously cleared via mechanical treatment to remove woody species. A 35 acre DZ expansion was conducted in 2012 which involved mechanical removal of primarily oak and mesquite trees. There are several small woody species stands in the DZ and surrounding area that need to be removed. Herbicide use is a follow-up procedure recommended in the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan The contractor must make a good faith effort to reduce compaction of soil and herbaceous vegetation. The primary objective of this project is to manage woody species in the DZ. This will 1) ensure a safer DZ for soldiers, 2) decrease the associated maintenance needs of mowing on and around the DZ, and 3) reduce fuel loads and mitigate risk of extreme wildfire in this training area.
