The Department intends to enter into a negotiated agreement. The geotechnical investigations conducted to date indicate that the site could be subject to soil liquefaction during the design eathquake. To better define and refine the extent of liquefaction and its potential consequences to the bridges foundation design the department plans to hire a qualified consultant to conduct cone penetrometer testing (CPT), perform site specific seismic analyses and evaluate the liquefaction potential at the site. The CPT testing analyses will meet the requirements of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications 2007. The consultant will provide recommended design magnitude, peak horizontal ground acceleration, depth and horizons of liquefiable soil, AASHTO Site Class and other parameters deemed appropriate by the consultant. In addition the final report will include a discussion of potential consequences of liquefaction including loss of bearing capacity, pile capacity degradation, lateral spreading and down drag.
