As part of The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)'s food safety compliance programs and radiological emergency response efforts, the Winchester Engineering and Analytical Center (WEAC) analyses food samples for radioactive strontium-90 to determine the prevailing level of Sr-90 in nation's food supply, assess radiation exposure from dietary intake, ensure safety of imported food products, and monitor food contamination from a nuclear or radiological incident. In an effort to comply with green government mandates, improve operation safety, and expand radioanalytical capability, a method based on solid-extraction liquid scintillation counting technique is currently under development and requires an automated dosing system that can efficiently, accurately, and safely dispense highly hydrophobic and statically-charged resin into plastic sample vials.
