Background: In the past year the VA provided care to over 90,000 Veterans with amputations, with over 45,000 of those being major limb amputations. In addition, the VA performed over 10,000 amputations last year. It is anticipated that with the large population of Veterans with diabetes this number could rise dramatically in the coming years. In order to support the needs of both the healthcare provider and patients alike it is necessary to have educational materials that provide information and resources to cope with having an amputation. Research has also shown that peer to peer support is extremely important in recovery and returning to the highest level of function and is a key recommendation in the VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline. As a result, it is of utmost importance that VA provide this service as part of the overall rehabilitation process.
