Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), operated by Battelle Memorial Institute under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy, solicits interest from companies interested in obtaining license rights to commercialize, manufacture and market the following technology. License rights may be issued on a limited exclusivity basis and may include specific fields of use. PNNL may also be available to licensee(s) to assist in further research and development of the technology under a SPP agreement, ACT agreement, or CRADA agreement.

THE TECHNOLOGY: A patented miniature gunshot detection/authentication technology is designed for closed environments with the ability to detect and report the presence of an active shooter (US Patent No. 10,089,845 and US Patent Applicaiton No. US20170169686A1). The technology comprises a miniature, low cost detector and that would reside within enclosed areas/spaces, networked and connected wirelessly to a central alarm system that would trigger a 911 response. Key components of the technology are miniature MEMS microphone, microcontroller, wireless transceiver and miniature battery. The detection methodology has been prototyped and tested under controlled laboratory and classroom environments for efficacy. The results of our studies were published in the peer reviewed Journal of Acoustic Society of America (reference: J. Acoust. Soc. Am., Vol. 139(5), Pg. 2723-2731, May 2016). The acoustic detector has the ability to differentiate between various types of gunshots from other interfering audio events. This method has been validated by collecting and analyzing over 250 audio signatures of gun shots and other sounds. The technology, as developed and demonstrated, forms the basis of acoustic detection, differentiation, and communications which would be integrated into a broader detection, response, and mitigation architecture.
