The Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a United States Department of Energy funded synchrotron facility that provides users from around the world access to the brightest beams of soft x-rays, together with hard x-rays and infrared, for scientific research and technology development in a wide range of disciplines.

ALS-U is the project name for a planned upgrade of the Advanced Light Source (ALS) at Berkeley Lab that will endow the ALS with revolutionary x-ray capabilities.


The upgraded ALS will include a new beamline called "Tender", which will use planar polarized light in the spectral region from 1 keV up to 5 keV photon energy. A sub-set of the planned experiments uses up to 8 keV photon energy, which can be done using higher harmonics. The brightness of the Tender beamline will be maximized by installing a state of the art cryogenically cooled in-vacuum undulator (CPMU), where the period length and magnetic field strength has been optimized for the spectral region 1-5 keV using the stored beam in the ALS-U, which has a beam energy of 2.0 GeV. There shall be overlap between the first and third harmonic, which implies that the K-value of the CPMU at minimum gap shall be 2.18 or higher.


The scope of the contemplated delivery is the CPMU described in the attached document, including the required review process and documentation, within the foreseen delivery time of 18 months after receiving order.
